Tummy Tuck

Excess weight gain or loss, pregnancy and progressive age relaxes the musckles of the anterior abdominal wall. Abdominal skin sagging, cracking and fat accumulation occurs. This situation eliminates the waist fold and the abdomen and waist area will become too thick.

Surgery to give a thin view of the waist area is called abdominal tuck surgery. This is done using a transverse skin incision made in the lower part of the abdomen. This removes the excess tissue by diluting the abdominal skin and the underlying fat tissue. In the surgery, the muscles of the abdominal wall are sutured and the slack of the abdomen is removed. Abdominal stretching is performed in two different ways according to the fat and skin excess in the abdomen and waist:

Mini tummy stretching

It is applied to patients whose abdominal skin excess and muscles are dense in the lower part of the navel. In this type of surgery, there is no incision around the navel. The incision made from the lower abdomen is very limited.

Full tummy tuck

It is applied to patients with more serious problems. These patients are people who are overweight or had two or more pregnancies. Their anterior abdominal wall is extremely loose. Even the tunnels reaching 10-15 cm between the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall can be detected. The anterior wall and waist area of the abdomen are heavily lubricated and the abdominal skin is sagged.

Liposuction is performed on the waist and abdomen before the classic abdominal tension surgery. Thus, the abdomen and waist area are more easily shaped by the surgery and the waist is more pronounced.

After surgery

Abdominal stretching is a surgery performed under general anesthesia in the hospital. It takes about 2-4 hours. It is sufficient for the patients to stay in the hospital for 1 day after the operation.

A drain is placed to collect the serum that seeps under the skin of the abdomen and is usually removed when discharged. Because abdominal muscles are tightened, patients may experience post-operative pain. These pain can be easily relieved with medications given during hospital stay. Within a few days, it gradually decreases and disappears at the end of a week. Patients use abdominal corset for 3 weeks postoperatively.

Gently leaning forward for about 1 week after surgery will reduce abdominal tension. In addition, walking at increasing distances accelerates the transition to normal life.

A few important notes on abdominal stretching:

– If the candidate is in the process of losing weight, surgery should be planned after this process is over.

– If pregnancy is expected within a prescribed period, surgery should be planned at least six months after birth.

Abdominal stretching surgery is not a direct treatment for stretch marks around the navel, but this problem is greatly alleviated by removing the skin area that contains the stretch marks.

– To reduce post-operative risks, patients who smoke should stop smoking at least 1 week before surgery. In patients with constipation and chronic cough, it is comforting to apply additional treatments to these problems during the postoperative period. However, it takes two months to start heavy exercises. At the end of the week, most patients can easily go to work.

In abdominal surgery, swelling and numbness occur in the surgical fields. In patients who had liposuction low bruising occurs. The swelling in these areas disappears and the curves appear completely  after one or two months. While the bruises completely disappear within a week, the numbness in the skin takes several months.Patients who pay attention to the weight retain the form for many years. Although it is not medically forbidden to get pregnant after surgery, it causes deformation in these areas again.
