Breast reduction surgery not only improves the shape and size of the breast but also provides a permanent solution to the problems that patients often complain about, such as neck and back pain caused by large breasts.
Right choice of patients
As it is understood from the explanation above, patients applying for breast reduction surgeries should be evaluated in three groups.
1-The young patient group, who is more socially and psychologically disturbed because of their large breasts after adolescence. On the one hand, these patients suffer from unhappiness about their body image while on the other hand they are afraid of being ridiculed in their friends and working environments.
2- Middle-aged patients who have tolerated the problem of breast size in the pre-pregnancy period to some extent, but who suffer from social-psychological problems and neckaches and headaches after an excessive growth with pregnancy and breastfeeding.
3-Patients who left behind the social-psychological problems of breast size, and even after the pregnancy, tolerated the early head and neck pain for a while, but with the onset of bone melting at the older age, these problems can no longer be overlooked. These elderly patients come to the plastic surgeon with the guidance of a physical therapist. The body shapes of these patients are slightly humped with the shoulders towards the front to compensate for the body weight centers that the breast size changes.
Breast reduction surgery is an operation lasting 3-4 hours, depending on the technique applied. It can be applied under general anesthesia. The incision made in the most common method, starts from around the nipple, runs downward in a vertical direction, extending horizontally in two directions in the undercut fold. After the breast head is adequately raised and excess breast tissue is removed, the skin areas on both sides are assembled under the breast and sewn in place.
In the method where only vertical incisions are used in recent years, the vertical breast reduction incision terminates in the breast region and no horizontal incision is made in both directions. This method is expected to expand and open in the 4-6 week period after surgery. Therefore, it is a procedure that requires a longer waiting time and patience for the patient.
After the Operation
The postoperative period of breast reduction surgeries is similar to breast lift operations. After a period of about 2-3 days, patients can take a shower and wear regular clothing. The patient should stay away from activities that will force them for 1-2 weeks after the operation. Approximately 1 month later, they can return to sporting activities.
